Breaking away from a second-half tie at 46, the University of Washington laid an 18-2 blitz on Cal Poly Tuesday night for a 77-61 non-conference win (box) at Hec Ed that included a rare glimpse of the Huskies playing defense.
“It was good to see our team go out and play right tonight,” said UW coach Lorenzo Romar, whose team improved to 6-5, while the Mustangs of the Big West Conference fell to 5-7.
The Huskies have been terrible defensively. Holding Cal Poly, which had an early 10-point lead, to 24 second-half points kept a UW foe to under 80 points for only the third time this season. The visitors shot 32 percent from the field, missing nine of 10 three-point attempts in the second half.
Guard David Crisp scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half to lead Washington, while Matisse Thybulle added 15 and Noah Dickerson had 12 points and 10 rebounds, his third double-double of the season. Star freshman Markelle Fultz had 14 points and a team-high five assists.
After a day off, the Huskies play at KeyArena at 7 p.m. Thursday night in the annual game against Seattle University, which has lost 11 in a row to the crosstown rivals.
“This will be fun,” said Thybulle. “I’ve never played there, but I grew up watching the Sonics there.”

Wow…what a performance! A PAC-12 team beat losing Cal Poly team at home after being tied at halftime. It’s time to put Romar and UW fans out of their misery.
