Erik Friberg, who did not have his contract option exercised following the Seattle Sounders’ first MLS Cup victory, has signed with BK Hacken, the Swedish club announced via Twitter Tuesday. Friberg made 31 appearances as a midfielder for Seattle in 2016, including 66 minutes in the MLS Cup final against Toronto FC.
Friberg rejoined the Sounders during the summer of 2015, an international signing designed to help alleviate the club’s struggles.
Normally a player in the defensive midfield, Friberg recorded a goal and four assists during his two-year stint with Seattle. The 30-year-old’s lone goal was the game-winner against the LA Galaxy in the 2015 Western Conference knockout round, helping Seattle defeat the Galaxy in the postseason for the first time in club history.
