The Huskies’ run to the the College Football Playoffs wasn’t enough to impress Foster Sarell, the local giant who was the nation’s top-ranked offensive lineman. The 6-foot-6, 315-pound All-State tackle from Graham-Kapowsin High School in Pierce County said Saturday he will sign a letter of intent to attend Stanford.
Sarell narrowed his choices to UW, Notre Dame, Nebraska and USC, but said he fulfilled a dream that went back to seventh grade when he wrote a letter saying he wanted to play for Stanford.
Sarell made the announcement in San Antonio, where he was playing in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl telecast nationally on NBC. He was surrounded by parents and other family members as he announced his choice.
“This whole process has been incredible,” he said. “Stanford has been my dream school since I was a little kid. So you follow your heart, and I think it let me to the right place.”
UW coaches thought they might have caused Sarell to waver because he was in attendance at Husky Stadium when UW clobbered Stanford 44-6. Coach Chris Petersen later even resorted to a little razzle-dazzle, showing up to one of Sarell’s games in a helicopter.
Stanford has scored a couple of times recently with top lineman recruits from the area. Bellevue High School’s David DeCastro (2008) and Puyallup High School’s Josh Garnett (2012) picked The Farm over staying close to home. Both were first-round picks in the NFL draft.
