The Mariners Tuesday signed veteran major league reliever Nick Hagadone, a Sumner native and former University of Washington star, to a minor league contact, a day after also inking another veteran reliever, Jean Machi. Both are likely to start the season with the AAA Tacoma Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League.
Hagadone, 31, spent 2016 rehabilitating after undergoing surgery in February for a fractured left elbow. He pitched with Cleveland in 2015, appearing in 36 games in relief and compiling a 0-1 record prior to being placed on the 15-day disabled list July 8 with lower back and elbow soreness.
Hagadone appeared in the majors in parts of five seasons with the Indians, posting a 3-2, 4.72 mark with one save in 143 relief appearances.
Hagadone graduated from Sumner High School, where he played football and baseball in 2004. He was drafted by the Mariners in the 36th round of that year’s draft but did not sign, instead attending UW. He was a first-team All-Pac-10 selection his junior year (2007) after going 6-1 with 11 saves and a 2.77 ERA in 25 games. He was selected by Cleveland as the 55th overall selection in 2007.
Machi played for the 2014 World Series champion San Francisco Giants, appearing in 71 games and going 7-1 with a 2.58 ERA. He appeared in six postseason games, including three in the World Series against Kansas City.
