Gonzaga (28-0), the only unbeaten team in Division I, remained No. 1 in the Associated Press college basketball rankings for a program record fourth consecutive week Monday. The Zags collected 59 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel to stay ahead of Villanova (26-2) and Kansas (24-3).
The Zags last week crushed San Francisco 96-61 and Pacific 82-61, and collected 1,618 total votes to Villanova’s 1,556 and Kansas’s 1,503.
Three teams from the Pac-12 Conference — Arizona (25-3), UCLA (24-3) and Oregon (24-4) — are fourth through sixth. Louisville is seventh, followed by North Carolina, Baylor and Duke. Gonzaga beat Pac-12 leader Arizona 69-62 in Los Angeles in December, and swept St. Mary’s (24-3), which advanced to No. 20.
Gonzaga plays at San Diego Thursday and closes out its regular-season West Coast Conference slate Saturday in Spokane against BYU.

When it comes to crunch time and adversity in NCAA tournament games, the great teams/coaches implement defensive pressure employing a full court or 3/4 court press. Gonzaga’s nemesis in the past has been Few’s inability or reluctance when facing elite teams, especially when being behind, to have this effective momentum changing weapon in his arsenal.
The excuse has been that his teams did not possess the “athleticism” to exercise this option. Hogwash. Athletes recruited to play at the Division 1 level are all more than capable of running and jumping with the best of them. Granted, some are better equipped than others but the margins are not that different.
Duke, Syracuse, Louisville, North Carolina are great examples of how effective this strategy can be in changing a game’s momentum. One of the best examples of how well a full court press can work was the late great John Wooden when he was at UCLA in the sixties and early seventies.
I love watching Gonzaga play and wish them well, however, until Few incorporates a defensive scheme that covers the whole court, their chances for winning the whole thing are greatly diminished.
