Matt Lubick, who was fired after four seasons as Oregon wide receivers coach as part of the purge of head coach Mark Helfrich, was hired Wednesday by University of Washington football coach Chris Petersen to the same position, plus sharing the offensive coordinator title with Jonathan Smith.

Lubick, 45, replaces Bush Hamdan, who left the Huskies earlier this month to become the Atlanta quarterbacks coach under new Falcons offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian. Lubick most recently was at Baylor, where he spent just six weeks after a shorter tenure at Mississippi, where he landed in December after leaving Eugene. Washington is the 11th school he has coached in his 21-year career.

“I am excited to add Matt to our coaching staff,” Petersen said. “He has earned a national reputation as an innovative coaching mind and a successful recruiter. Equally as important, we believe he will be a terrific fit with our staff, players and the University of Washington.”

Lubick is a native of Bozeman, MT., and played defensive back at Western Montana, where he was an NAIA All-America selection. Washington will be his fourth Pac-12 coaching stop. He also worked at Oregon State (1999-2000) when Smith was a quarterback with the Beavers, as well as at Arizona State (2007-09) and Oregon from 2013-16.

  1. Bevell stays at the Hawks, Smith stays at the Dawgs – Considering the coaching staffs on both teams are admirable, why do the Pete’s not see these positions can be improved? When coordinators are not hired away, let alone INTERVIEWED, guess what? Can it be said any louder?
BOTH programs are in the top, yet both are arguably there more due to the defenses than their O’s. If both teams hit it out of the park with OC’s, they would be in the SB and possibly higher than #4. Concerning Smith and the Huskies’ O, it is no surprise Jake went downhill after Tedford left, which was the week before the USC game. He was an “adviser” without contact with players, officially, yet the results for Jake spoke for themselves.
