The Seahawks Friday received two compensatory picks in the 2017 NFL draft as the result of losing LB Bruce Irvin (Oakland), T Russell Okung (Denver), DT Brandon Mebane (San Diego) and OL J.R. Sweezy (Tampa Bay) in free agency last March while signing free- agent OLs Bradley Sowell and J’Marcus Webb. Both compensatory picks will be in the third round.
Seattle’s compensatory selections will come at 101st and 106th overall. That means the Seahawks, barring other developments, will have seven picks, Nos. 26 (1st), 58 (2nd), 90 (3rd), 102 (3rd), 106 (3rd), 210 (6th) and 226 (7th, via Carolina).
Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver and Kansas City all received four compensatory picks, Miami gets three and the Los Angeles Rams, along with the Seahawks, two. San Francisco and Arizona, both of the NFC West, received one each. The Rams’ compensatory picks are in the third (100th overall) and fourth (141st) rounds. San Francisco’s is in the fourth (143rd) and Arizona’s in the fifth (181st).
Under NFL rules, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory picks. All compensatory picks are positioned within the third through seventh rounds based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost. Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council.
The Seahawks are scheduled to pick 26th in the first round. The Seahawks also have the 58th overall pick in the second round and three picks in the third.
Seattle does not have a fourth-round pick, having traded it during the draft last year to New England in order to select DL Quinton Jefferson in the fifth round. Seattle also does not have a fifth-round choice. The Seahawks lost that last September as punishment for an OTA violation.

Looks like they would have picked up 2 more if they hadn’t signed Webb and Sowell, neither of whom worked out. The “gifts” that keep giving.
That’s not true. There is a formula for compensatory picks based on salary, production, etc. It’s not simply a pick for a player. I doubt if either if those two impacted Seattle much, in a negative sense, for receiving these picks….Webb was gone early, Sowell started a few games but wasn’t all that productive, signed a low salary, and was inactive at the end if the season.
