To no one’s surprise, the Pac-12 Conference Tuesday named Washington’s Kelsey Plum as its 2016-17 Player of the Year. Plum, who set the NCAA career scoring mark Saturday with a 57-point outburst against Utah at Alaska Airlines Arena, averaged 31.6 points per game this season, more than six points higher than her nearest competitor.

Plum was named the top player in a vote of the conference’s 12 basketball coaches. Plum is only the second player in program history to win the award, following Giuliana Mendiola in 2002-03.

Plum also heads the 15-player All-Pac-12 team, which includes Huskies center Chantel Osahor, who led the nation in rebounds (14.9 per game) and double-doubles (26).

After her spree against the Utes, Plum was named player of the week for a record sixth time this season (eight times in her career). Plum has 3,397 career points. The senior recorded 14 30-plus games, four 40-plus games and one 50-plus contest.

Plum also led the Huskies in assists (4.77 per game) and topped the conference in free throw percentage (.887).

Plum is the 12th player in NCAA history to reach 3,000 points, and the only player in Pac-12 basketball history, male or female, to make the milestone. A national player of the year candidate, she is on the watch lists for the Wade Trophy, Naismith Award and John Wooden Award.

Oregon State coach Scott Rueck was named the recipient of the conference’s Wooden Coach of the Year Award. Rueck led the Beavers to their third consecutive conference regular-season title with a win over Cal Sunday in Corvallis.

Also honored by the conference: Oregon State’s Gabriella Hanson, Defensive Player of the Year, and Oregon’s Sabrina Ionescu, Freshman of the Year.

Plum and the No. 3-seeded Huskies begin play in the conference tournament Friday at 8:30 p.m. against the winner of Thursday’s game between No. 6 Oregon and No. 11 Arizona.

  1. Kelsey has been awesome to follow during her time as a Husky. Hopefully she won’t get snubbed by the WNBA the way Giuliana was. Looking forward to the Lady Huskies tearing thru March again!

    • If Kelsey isn’t the #1 pick in the WNBA draft, she’ll be #2. I’m a bit curious how Osahor fares in the draft.
