Seattle University Monday fired Cameron Dollar, who completed his eighth season as the school’s men’s basketball coach. A former University of Washington assistant under Lorenzo Romar, Dollar had a 90-124 (.421) record since taking over the Redhawks in 2010.
“I am grateful to Coach Dollar and his staff for their dedication and commitment to the mission and values of Seattle University, especially with their emphasis on the personal development of the young men who have come through the program,” said Seattle U Director of Athletics Shaney Fink. “However, after thorough evaluation, I have decided that a change in leadership is necessary in order to achieve the full potential of our men’s basketball program.”
“Cameron Dollar has represented Seattle U and Redhawks men’s basketball with class, professionalism and integrity,” said President Stephen V. Sundborg. “He is highly respected by his players and enjoys tremendous goodwill from the SU community. While we have not seen the progress we had hoped we would by this point, I am deeply appreciative of all that he has accomplished with our student-athletes and the University’s return to Division I.”
Dollar produced one winning season when his 2014-15 team finished 18-16. In the past week, the Redhawks lost to Utah Valley 65-53 in the quarterfinals of the Western Athletic Conference tournament, concluding a 13-17 campaign.
Before taking over at SU, which made the transition to Division I during Dollar’s tenure, he spent seven seasons helping Romar at UW. He played a major role in the 2005 and 2006 seasons as Washington advanced to the NCAA’s Sweet Sixteen both years. He also helped lead the Huskies to a Pac-10 regular-season title in 2008-09.
Prior to coaching at Washington, Dollar served three years as an assistant coach on Romar’s Saint Louis University staff. He began his coaching career at UC Irvine in 1997, two years after helping lead his alma mater, UCLA, to the national championship. That year’s Final Four was held in the Kingdome.

Dollar and Romar – can you find two coaches anywhere in the same city with more miserable programs? They couldn’t have done worse if they had planned it.
Well they were together at UW once and made it to the tourney five times. Time to get the band back together.
I blame the (SU) institution, although we also have Gonzaga to thank—The Zags wanted to own Washington state and the Seattle metro area and they blocked SU from WCC membership. Meanwhile, the WCC allows St. Mary’s, Santa Clara, Pacific, and San Francisco to exist in closer proximity. The Zags used the excuse that SU would bring down the reputation of the WCC but that is a fraudulent excuse. (I refer you to the routine pounding the Zags put on all the other WCC opponents.) And then welcome BYU in the WCC–what a BS act that was. Check out BYU’s gym compared to ALL the WCC gyms, including the one in Spokane. BYU has no business in the WCC.
The WCC should be called Gonzaga and the Seven Dwarfs. And one more thing—which school has last played for a NCAA basketball championship–Seattle U or Gonzaga. Just saying’ —-

Dollar seemed like the equivalent to the first coach of an expansion pro team. His job is to get the program and culture established, and winning out of the gate is not expected (the Sounders being the rare exception). After the program has a few seasons under its belt and gone through drafts/recruiting classes, then the emphasis shifts to winning. If he doesn’t do that by year four or five, it’s on to the next coach.
