He started only three games at guard for the Houston Texans last season, but Oday Aboushi, 25, will get a chance with the Seahawks, family home for journeyman linemen. Aboushi, a 6-5, 308-pounder announced his signing to a one-year deal Friday on Twitter.
Aboushi, a native of Brooklyn, was a fifth-round pick out of Virginia in 2013 by the New York Jets, where he started 10 games in 2014. He was cut in September 2015 and picked up by the Texans. Pro Football Focus ranked him 58th out of 72 guards last season.
Coach Pete Carroll made it clear he was after veteran help along the O-line, ranked last by PFF in 2016 in terms of efficiency. Aboushi will push Mark Glowinski on the left side, and Germain Ifedi on the right. Ifedi might also be given a shot at right tackle, occupied by veteran Garry Gilliam.
On the first day of free agency March 9, the Seahawks signed OL Luke Joeckel, formerly of Jacksonville, to a one-year, $8 million deal, $7 million guaranteed.
Aboushi is the ninth of 10 children born to a family that immigrated to New York from Palestine. A practicing Muslim, Aboushi in 2014 and 2015 traveled to Sudan with the Islamic Medical Association of North America to help repair cleft lips and cleft palates in the impoverished East African nation.
Sudan is one of six countries named in the Trump administration’s proposed travel ban that has been stymied in federal court.
Also Friday, the Seahawks signed LB Arthur Brown, a 2013 second-round pick from Kansas State who played three seasons with Baltimore, then split last season between Jacksonville and the New York Jets. His brother is Bryce Brown, a running back who played briefly for the Seahawks in 2015.
Brown played mostly on special teams, and could be the guy to occupy the role filled by Brock Coyle, a free agent who signed last week with the 49ers.
Among players who visited Seahawks headquarters in Renton was Ryan Clady, 30, a two-time All Pro (2009, 2012) left tackle for Denver whose 2016 season with the Jets ended after nine games because of a rotator-cuff tear that required surgery. The former Boise State star and 12th pick overall in the 2008 draft has, due to injuries, played only 27 of a possible 64 games since 2013 because of injury.
