A day after he was granted a release from his national letter of intent from the University of Washington, prep sensation Michael Porter Jr. announced that he would, as expected, play college basketball at the University of Missouri in his hometown. He will follow his father, Michael Porter Sr., hired as a Missouri assistant Thursday.
“Last week everything changed for me regarding my college basketball decision,” Porter said in a statement Friday. “Realizing I would no longer have the opportunity to play for Coach (Lorenzo) Romar, I have taken the past seven days to give great consideration to my future.
“After a lot of thought, prayer and talking with my family, I’m excited to announce that next year I will be playing at the University of Missouri!
“I’m looking forward to the year ahead with Coach Cuonzo and my new teammates. Together we hope to restore the atmosphere at Mizzou Arena.”
Porter. the Naismith and Gatorade National Prep Player of the year, averaged more than 30 points per game in leading Nathan Hale High School, coached by former UW star Brandon Roy, to the 3A state championship. His father, a longtime friend of Romar’s, served as a Romar assistant last season.
In the wake of Romar’s firing, and before Mike Hopkins succeeded him, the Huskies lost a commitment from four-star point guard Blake Harris. Huskies reserve Matthew Atewe also announced his intention to transfer. Starting forward Noah Dickerson is reportedly on the verge of transferring.

Porter’s mother has also been hired to superintend the student athletes’ study hall at Missouri. Its Sports Management major is reputed to present one of the tougher academic challenges in the SEC.

LOL! Good one, time for grown adults to quit hanging their emotions on a 17 year old boy and act like adults. A one and done switched schools, so what! The program was a mess and the clean up is never pretty.
Romar went low, and got even dirtier with a failed season. Bad over head time.
What a sleazy situation, basically paying parents big money to get their kid to play for you. Romar paid one parent, now Cuonzo is paying both of them. NCAA, wassup?

Sleazy is not only not against the rules in NCAA, it is mandatory.
how is ncaa ok with that whoever hires his dad gets the kid?
Been done for years. NCAA has far fewer rules on adult behavior than athletes’ behavior.
The foundation of the program cannot be built on one and dones. UW is not Kentucky or Duke nor UCLA. They have to work harder to get recruits that will stay will the program for more than one year. That may mean you aren’t going to land the 5 star kids like Porter Jr. But it will give the program more long term stability.
Woodward ordered Romar to go after one-and-dones. They are not the problem. It’s the other guys who have to be coached into a game plan that works.
I understand that one-and-dones are part of the process, but it can’t be the heart of the program (unless you are Calipari and UK).
And where are Woodward and Romar now?
There is an elite tier of basketball schools that can pull off the one-and-dones year after year. UW is not one of them. I’m hoping for more stability for the program long term.
