Segura to DL, Freeman summoned, Fry DFA’d

The Mariners Tuesday placed SS Jean Segura on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring, selected INF Mike Freeman from AAA Tacoma and designated LHP Paul Fry for assignment. Segura, who had four multi-hit games heading into the home opener, was injured early in Seattle’s 6-0 victory over the Houston Astros Monday.

Freeman, 29, hit .333 with two runs in three games with the Rainiers this season. He was moved from the 40-man roster during spring training when the club acquired RHP Chase De Jong from the Dodgers. In 13 games with Seattle last season, he hit .385 after being acquired off waivers from Arizona.

In eight minor league seasons, Freeman hit .290 with 18 home runs and 270 RBIs in 745 games in the Arizona (2010-16) and Seattle (2016-17) organizations. He was selected by Arizona in the 11th round of the 2010 draft out of Clemson University.

Segura, 27, was hitting .313 with one homer and three RBIs.He was acquired from Arizona along with OF Mitch Haniger and LHP Zac Curtis Nov. 23.

With Segura out, Jarrod Dyson will move into the leadoff spot, Taylor Motter will become the everyday shortstop, and Freeman will play a utility role.

Seattle has seven days to trade, release or outright Fry to the minors.

The Mariners (2-6) play the second of three against the Astros 1t 7:10 p.m.Tuesday night at Safeco Field. LHP Ariel Miranda will throw for Seattle opposite RHP Joe Musgrove.

 

 

 

 

 

Fry, 24, made just one appearance with AAA Tacoma before being designated for assignment. He was placed on the 40-man roster this offseason and in five minor league seasons he is 13-14 with a 2.89 ERA (76 ER, 237.0 IP) with 290 strikeouts in 151 games including 6 starts. He was selected by Seattle in the 17th round of the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of St. Clair County Community College (Port Huron, MI).
