New University of Washington head basketball coach Mike Hopkins Wednesday announced the signings of Nate Pryor and Michael Carter III to scholarships for the 2017 season. Pryor and Carter are first recruits signed by Hopkins, who replaced Lorenzo Romar earlier this month.
“These two additions to our class really complement our current team by giving us additional depth,” said Hopkins. “It’s great that they’re both local guys and they are two perfect fits for what we want to build here at the University of Washington.”
Pryor, of West Seattle High, decommited from Seattle University, where coach Cameron Dollar had been fired. When Dollar was hired to be Hopkins’ assistant coach, Pryor followed him five miles north.
Pryor led the Wildcats to their first state boys semifinal appearance since 1970 during his senior campaign, averaging 18.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.7 assists. As a junior, Pryor averaged 18.0 points, 5.0 assists and 4.7 rebounds, and put up 21.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists during his sophomore season.
“Nate Pryor is a stone-cold winner,” said Hopkins. “He’s a great point guard, with a high IQ that knows how to run a team and has an ability to find ways to win. Because of those qualities, he reminds me a lot of Tyler Ennis, who I coached at Syracuse.”
Carter, a 6-foot-5 guard, played at O’Dea High School as a junior and senior, where he averaged 17 points in leading the Irish to the Class 3A state championship in 2016. After graduating following the state title, Carter III spent the 2016-17 season with the Elite Sports Academy in Issaquah.
“Michael is obviously a high-level player,” added Hopkins. “He’s one of those kids that keeps getting better and better. He has grown nearly eight inches over the last couple of years to be at 6-5. He can really shoot the ball and make plays off the bounce. He’s a matchup nightmare at his position.”
