Hoping to fix a struggling bullpen, the Mariners Friday activated RHP Tony Zych from his rehab assignment at AAA Tacoma and, to make room on the club’s 25-man roster, optioned LHP Dillon Overton to the Rainiers. Zych will be available Friday night when Seattle (2-8) begins a three-game series with the Texas Rangers (4-5) at Safeco Field.
Zych, 26, made one rehab appearance with Tacoma, allowing three runs on three hits, including a home run, while striking out two April 9 at Sacramento. He also appeared in a suspended game April 7 at Sacramento.
The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder underwent biceps tendon transfer surgery Oct. 11. The surgery, which didn’t involve the rotator cuff or capsule in the right shoulder, was performed by Dr. Stephen O’Brien in New York.
Zych went 1-0 with a 3.29 ERA in 12 outings with the Mariners last season.
Overton, 25, made two relief appearances with the Mariners this season, allowing three runs on three hits and one walk while striking out 2 in 1.1 innings. The 6-foot-2, 172-pound left-hander was on the Opening Day roster April 2.
He was placed on the paternity list the following day and re-joined the Mariners Sunday. The Mariners acquired Overton Jan. 26 from Oakland in exchange for catcher Jason Goldstein.
RHP Felix Hernandez (0-1, 4.09) will throw for Seattle at 7:10 p.m. Friday night opposite LHP Martin Perez (1-1, 2.38).
Paul Fry sent to Baltimore
One bad game in AAA Tacoma ended things for reliever Paul Fry. He gave up six hits and four runs in one inning and was designated for assignment April 11. Friday he was traded to Baltimore for an international signing slot. He was added to the 40-man roster Nov. 18. In five minor league seasons, he was 13-14 with a 2.89 ERA with 290 strikeouts in 151 games.
