The Mariners (7-10) Friday recalled RHP Chase De Jong from AAA Tacoma and optioned RHP Dan Altavilla, who gave up a three-run homer to Trevor Plouffe Thursday, to the Rainiers. De Jong will be available at 7:05 p.m. Friday when they play the second of four games against the Athletics at the Oakland Coliseum.
De Jong, 23, went 2-0 with a 1.74 ERA and 10 strikeouts in two starts for Tacoma. He made his MLB debut April 5 at Houston, taking the loss. The Mariners acquired De Jong from the Dodgers March 1. He was recalled from Tacoma (Dillon Overton paternity leave) on Opening Day.
The Texas League Pitcher of the Year and a AA All-Star at Tulsa last year, De Jong was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the second round of the 2012 draft out of Wilson High School in Long Beach, CA. He was acquired by the Dodgers in 2015.
Altavilla, 24, went 1-1 with a 7.36 ERA in nine relief appearances this season. In his first five outings, Altavilla tossed four scoreless innings and earned his first career win. But over his past four appearances, he allowed seven runs (six earned) in 3.1 innings.
The native of McKeesport, PA, made his MLB debut with Seattle last season, posting 15 scoreless appearances (12.1 IP) while striking out 10 and walking one. He was drafted by the Mariners in the fifth round in 2014 out of Mercyhurst (PA) College.
RHP Hisashi Iwakuma (0-1, 5.40) will throw for the Mariners Friday night opposite LHP Sean Manaea (0-1, 5.51). After the series concludes Sunday, the Mariners will continue their road trip in Detroit and Cleveland.
