The Mariners Friday announced medical updates on RHP Felix Hernandez and OF Mitch Haniger and the news was not good — both will miss between three to four weeks after injuries Tuesday in a game in Detroit.
After Mariners medical director Dr. E. Edward Fhalfayan examined the players upon return to Seattle, he determined that Hernandez has bursitis in his right shoulder and that Haniger has a grade two strain of his right oblique muscle.
Hernandez is 2-2 with a 3.73 ERA. He allowed four runs on six hits Tuesday in Seattle’s 19-9 loss before departing the game. Haniger is batting .338 with a .442 on-base percentage, four home runs and 16 RBIs. He was also lifted Tuesday and experiencing pain during an at-bat.
The Mariners (10-13), winners of two in a row, began a three-game series against the Cleveland Indians Friday night at Progressive Field. LHP Ariel Miranda (1-2, 4.35) wias to throw for Seattle opposite RHP Carlos Carrasco (2-1, 1.65).

Sure am glad that the Mariners didn’t try to trade Hernandez 2 years ago…now we are left with an aging (by IPs), injured pitcher that is no longer all that effective when healthy sucking up payroll. Don’t worry though, we will likely deal him for a middle reliever that will be OK for a season or two…just like what occurred with Ichiro. Winning organizations rarely get sentimental over players.
