The Mariners Saturday recalled OF Boog Powell from AAA Tacoma and placed RHP Evan Scribner on the 10-day disabled list with a flexor bundle strain. Powell will make his MLB debut with his first appearance, which could come Saturday when Seattle plays the second of three against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field.
For the moment, it means the Mariners are trimming the bullpen from eight to seven.
Powell, 24, hit .261 with 13 runs, three doubles and a .424 on-base percentage in 14 games with Tacoma. He hit safely in five of his past six games, including a four-hit effort Monday at Albuquerque. During that span, he batted .400. Among Pacific Coast League leaders, he ranks T4 in walks (13), T8 in steals (5) and 14th in on-base percentage. He was reinstated from the restricted list April 12 after his suspension for performing-enhancing drugs that began last season.
He appeared in 64 games with Tacoma last season, batting .270. Powell was acquired by the Mariners along with RHP Nathan Karns and LHP C.J. Riefenhauser from Tampa Bay for RHP Danny Farquhar, INF Brad Miller and INF Logan Morrison Nov. 5, 2015.
In parts of six minor league seasons in the Athletics (2012-14), Rays (2015) and Mariners organizations (2016-17), he is a career .299 hitter.
Scribner, 31, was 0-2 with an 11.05 ERA in eight relief appearances with Seattle this season. In parts of seven MLB seasons, he is 5-4 with a 4.15 ERA. He was acquired by Seattle from Oakland in exchange for RHP Trey Cochran-Gill Dec. 8, 2015.
The Mariners (11-13) will try to extend their winning streak to four Saturday when RHP Yovani Gallardo (1-2, 4.34) takes the hlll opposite RHP Danny Salazar (1-2, 4.37).
