The Mariners (11-15) made another flurry of roster moves Tuesday, selecting RHPs Jean Machi and Emilio Pagan from AAA Tacoma, designating RHP Casey Fien for assignment, optioning 1B Daniel Vogelbach to the Rainiers and transferring INF Shawn O’Malley to the 60-day disabled list (right shoulder tendinitis).
Machi and Pagan were available to the club Tuesday night when it begins a three-game series with the Los Angeles Angels at Safeco Field to start a six-game home stand.
Machi, 35, is 1-0 with four saves and no earned runs in eight relief appearances with Tacoma this season. Among Pacific Coast League leaders, he ranks T3 in saves. He began the year with seven consecutive outings without issuing a walk. In his first five outings, Machi earned three saves while scattering three hits.
Machi last appeared in the majors in 2015 when he split the season with San Francisco and Boston. In parts of four MLB seasons, he’s 12-2 with a 3.57 ERA. The native of El Tigre, Venezuela, signed with Philadelphia as a non-drafted free agent Feb. 22, 2000.
Pagan, 25, will make his MLB debut in his first appearance. He earned one save and a 3.27 ERA in six relief appearances with Tacoma this season. He has at least two strikeouts in each of his six outings. He also pitched for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic..
.In parts of five minor league seasons in the Mariners organization, Pagan has a record of 11-15 with 47 saves and a 2.47 ERA. The native of Greenville, SC., was selected by the Mariners in the 10th round of the 2013 draft out of Belmont Abbey College (Belmont, NC).
Fien, 33, posted a 15.00 ERA in six relief appearances with the Mariners this season. The club has seven days to release, trade, or outright his contract to the Rainiers.
Vogelbach, 24, hit .143 with one RBI in six games with the Mariners after being recalled from Tacoma April 23. He was acquired at the trade deadline in a deal that sent RHP Mike Montgomery to Chicago.
O’Malley, 29, was placed on the 10-day disabled list March 31 while recovering from surgery to remove his appendix, but was dealing with a sore shoulder in spring training.
LHP James Paxton (3-0, 1.39) will throw the series opener at 7:10 p.m. against the Angels Tuesday night opposite RHP Matt Shoemaker (1-1, 4.73).

A 11-16 is not the end of the season lament, however shuffling the cards over and over again, rearranging the chairs on the Titanic, leaves one with the same cards and same chairs. It appears the the frantic roster moves may only demonstrate the many holes in the ship Mariner.
