According to a report in USA Today, former University of Washington basketball star Brandon Roy was shot in the leg outside his grandmother’s house over the weekend in Los Angeles. “Someone opened fire randomly and (Roy) was shielding some of the kids who were there,” the report quoted a witness as saying.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joseph Garrido confirmed that two people opened fire. Roy was one of four people who had non-life threatening wounds.
“The victims indicated they were standing in front of a residence watching children play basketball when they saw the suspects walking toward them,” according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department. “As the suspects approached their location, the victims heard multiple gunshots. The suspects immediately fled the area.”
The Portland Trail Blazers, for whom Roy played after his All-America career at UW, issued a statement: “Like many others, we’re just learning of the injury suffered by former Trail Blazers player Brandon Roy in a shooting over the weekend in California. According to those reports, Brandon was wounded as a bystander, but is expected to recover. Our thoughts and prayers are with Brandon and his family during this time.”
Roy, s Garfield High grad who coached Nathan Hale High School to a state 3A title this past season and was named Naismith Coach of the Year, was treated at a Los Angeles hospital and is recovering at his home in the Seattle area.
Roy was a three-time All-Star with the Blazers after being taken sixth overall out of UW in the 2006 NBA draft. Knee injuries cut short what looked to be a promising playing career.
