The search for a potential backup quarterback is heating up a bit with news, first reported on NFL.com, that the Seahawks have brought in for workouts to ensure the use of correct Sports Surfaces to prevent injury on playerts.

Kaepernick has been the object of much off-season speculation as to whether the free agent who opted out of his contract with the 49ers was being blackballed because of his controversial social activism last season, which drew national attention. The workout invite by Seattle appears to be the first from an NFL club.

Coach Pete Carroll said in a recent interview that the Seahawks “were looking at everybody” in case they decide to replace Trevone Boykin, a rookie last year who ran into a second round of legal trouble this off-season.

A signing isn’t necessarily in the offing. The Seahawks bring in many players for workouts whom they do not sign, or sign later.

But it’s the necessary first step, particularly since the first organized team activities for the 2017 season begin next week at team headquarters in Renton. A mandatory mini-camp is June 13-15. The Seahawks aren’t in action this week because the club was sanctioned a week’s worth of work by the NFL for violating rules a year ago for too much contact during drills.

Davis, 27, was with Denver last year but did not play. He did start 10 games for the St. Louis Rams in 2014, including a 28-26 win over the Seahawks. Besides Boykin, the only other QB on the roster is Jake Heaps, the former Skyline High star who was in camp a year ago. Seattle did not keep two undrafted QBs, Skyler Howard and Daniel Birdsong, who were in rookie camp.

Kaepernick, 29, started 11 games last season for San Francisco, a team he took to the Super Bowl and signed him to a long-term deal, but fell out of favor with a new coach and GM. He had 16 TD passes and four interceptions for a 2-14 team. He has conveyed through sources that no longer plans to kneel during the national anthem, a protest that sparked praise and fury from fans and non-fans..

  1. I have been watching the NFL since the 1970’s and I recall that it wasn’t unusual for players to be kneeling on the sideline during the anthem. I guess now its’s all about the tv show; we need to see the players participate in the pre game ritual the way we want them to, otherwise we suspect they are insufficiently deferential to the greatness of our nation. Even though plenty of people in the stands refuse to take their hats off, stadium employees ignore the anthem, etc etc. We want the players to play their part in the show.

I am happy to stand for the anthem, but it bugs me how at baseball games people are expected to stand for God Bless America now.

I don’t care too much who the backup QB is, as long as he is cheap and doesn’t get much attention. The offensive line is going to be better this year, so I don’t think it’s going to matter.

All of which has nothing to do with the fact Kaepernick thinks police officers are pigs and showed as much by wearing socks to his place of employment depicting them as pigs.

Maybe you want that type of person on the football team you follow – if the price is right – but not me.

      • The pig socks didn’t add anything positive to the issue, that’s for sure. But you have to admit he was right it makes no sense that in California it takes more hours of education to qualify for a cosmetology license than to be a police officer. People who are legally authorized to shoot to kill when they feel they are in danger, even if they don’t see a weapon, should get more training than that.
Is wearing some socks dumb socks as bad as a guy who beats up his wife, but still gets to play in the NFL? I really don’t care enough to evaluate the players for their political opinions, and then decide to not root for the ones I disagree with.
