The Mariners Friday activated RHP Felix Hernandez from a rehab assignment with AAA Tacoma and, to make room on the club’s 25-man MLB roster, optioned RHP Andrew Moore to the Rainiers. Hernandez started Friday and was the winning pitcher in a 13-3 rout over Houston at Safeco Field, giving up eight hits and three runs in seven innings.
Hernandez, 31, went 2-0 with a 4.15 ERA in three rehab starts with Tacoma after he was placed on the disabled list April 26 with right-shoulder inflammation. In his first five starts with the Mariners before the injury, he was 2-2 with a 4.73 ERA.
Hernandez is the Mariners all-time career leader in wins (156), starts (364), quality starts (242), innings pitched (2442.1) and strikeouts (2286). The native of Valencia, Venezuela, o signed with the Mariners as a non-drafted free agent July 4, 2002.
Moore, 23, made his MLB debut Thursday night, getting the win against Detroit. Prior to his promotion, he went 4-3 with a 2.72 ERA in 14 games, including 13 starts, with Tacoma and AA Arkansas.
In three minor league seasons in the Seattle organization (2015-17), Moore has combined to go 17-8 with a 2.59 ERA in 56 games. He was a second round (72nd overall) in the 2015 draft out of Oregon State University, and is considered the organization’s No. 2 prospect.
The Mariners (39-37) have won six in a row, including a four-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers.
