Mariners bullpen coach Mike Hampton has tendered his resignation, effective immediately. GM Jerry Dipoto and manager Scott Servias made the disclosure following Seattle’ 4-0 victory over the Oakland Athletics Sunday afternoon at Safeco Field. Dipoto told mlb.com that Hampton sought to spend more time with his family.
A replacement has not yet been named, but will, according to Dipoto, prior to the season resuming Friday following the All-Star break.
The Mariners hit the break with a 43-47 record, 17.5 games behind the Houston Astros in the AL West race, but only four behind in the second AL wild card spot. Hampton’s resignation came after relievers Marc Rzepczynski, Nick Vincent and Edwin Diaz combined for three hitless innings Sunday.
Hampton was in his second season as the club’s bullpen coach. This was his first big league coaching position. He worked as a pitching coach with the AA Arkansas Travelers in 2013 and 2014.
The Mariners selected Hampton in the sixth round of the 1990 amateur draft. He pitched in 13 games for Seattle in 1993 and was traded to Houston after that season. He pitched for 16 seasons in the major leagues, finishing with a record of 148-115 and a 4.06 ERA.

Wait. I thought that was Lou. No, Griffey. No…wait…
Though the ‘pen has been inconsistent IMO they’ve gotten the best that they could especially this season with all the injuries to the entire pitching staff. It was cool seeing Mike back in an M’s uniform and hope he returns someday. In the meantime I’d love to see the Sheriff return.
