The Seahawks and SS Kam Chancellor Tuesday agreed on a three-year contract extension worth $36 million, of which $25 million is guaranteed, according to a report by ESPN. The deal will keep the 29-year-old Chancellor with the Seahawks through the 2020 season.
“I love this team,” Chancellor said Monday before the deal was announced. “They gave me the first opportunity and the only opportunity, and I would love to retire here.”
Chancellor is in the final year of a four-year, $28 million extension that he signed in 2013.
One year into that extension, in September 2015, Chancellor requested a new contract. When he did not get it, he held out through training camp, exhibition season and the first two games. Seattle lost both games and went 10-4 after his return.
According to OvertheCap.com, Chancellor’s new deal makes him the third-highest paid safety in the NFL behind Kansas City’s Eric Berry ($13.5 million per year) and Arizona’s Tyrann Mathieu ($12 million). Seattle’s highest earners are QB Russell Wilson at $21.75 million and CB Richard Sherman at $14 million.
Also according to site, the Seahawks have $123 million in guaranteed money committed to their secondary, $32 million more than the next-highest team, Arizona.
The Seahawks took Chancellor in the fifth round of the 2010 draft, 133rd overall. He is a four-time Pro Bowl selection and a four-time member of the NFL.com’s Top 100. He has appeared in 100 games, making 84 starts. Chancellor has 12 interceptions in his seven seasons.
