The Mariners made four roster moves ahead of Saturday’s 3:10 p.m. PT game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field, most notably activating OF Mitch Haniger from the disabled list and recalling RHP Casey Lawrence from AAA Tacoma. Both will be available for the second game of the three-game series.
The Mariners also placed OF Jarrod Dyson on the 10-day DL with a right groin strain and optioned RHP Sam Gaviglio to the Rainiers.
The Mariners placed Haniger, 26, on the DL July 30 after he was struck in the face by a pitch. He began a rehab assignment with Tacoma Aug. 1 and in six games hit .190. In 57 games with the Mariners, he’s batting .255 with seven home runs and 24 RBIs.
He was also on the DL earlier this season with a strained right oblique, missing 42 games before being activated June 11.
The Mariners acquired Haniger along with INF Jean Segura and LHP Zac Curtis from the Arizona Diamondbacks Nov. 23 in exchange for RHP Taijuan Walker and INF Ketel Marte.
Lawrence, 29, is on his fourth stint with the Mariners. He was optioned to Tacoma Aug. 15 but did not appear with the Rainiers. In 13 relief appearances with Seattle, he is 1-0 with a 5.64 ERA with 34 strikeouts and five walks.
The Mariners claimed Lawrence off waivers from Toronto May 11.
Dyson, 33, batting .255, leads the American League and ranks fourth in the majors with 28 steals. He also has 14 defensive runs saved, fourth most in the majors. Seattle acquired Dyson from the Royals Jan. 6 in exchange for RHP Nathan Karns.
Gaviglio, 27, was recalled from AAA Tacoma Aug. 15 but has not appeared with the Mariners since. In 12 games (11 starts) over three stints, he is 3-5 with a 4.62 ERA.
The Mariners, who moved a game above .500 (62-61) Friday night with a 7-1 victory over the Rays, will start LHP Ariel Miranda (7-6, 4.75) opposite RHP Jake Odorizzi (6-6, 4.30).
