The Mariners Wednesday reinstated reliever David Phelps from the disabled list and, to make room on the 25-man major league roster, designated OF Leonys Martin for assignment. Phelps will be available to the club when it takes on the Braves in Atlanta in the finale of a three-game series Wednesday night.

Phelps, 30, went on the DL with an impingement in his right elbow Aug. 8. Since being acquired by the Mariners July 20, he was 1-1 with three holds and a 2.57 ERA in seven appearances. He had 11 strikeouts and one walk.

The 6-foot-2, 198-pound right-hander was acquired a five-player deal with Miami. He is 3-5 with a 3.33 ERA win 51 combined appearances with the Mariners and Marlins this season.

Martin, 29, hit .174 in 34 games with Seattle this season. Since being selected from AAA Tacoma July 30, he hit .230 in 19 games. After being outrighted to Tacoma April 27, he hit .312 in 84 games.

The Mariners have seven days to trade, release or outright Martin’s contract to the minor leagues.

The Mariners (64-63), two games behind in the race for the second American League wild card slot, start RHP Erasmo Ramirez (5-4, 4.52) Wednesday night at 4:35 p.m. PT. Atlanta starts former Mariners knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (8-8, 3.98).
