The Mariners Monday recalled RHP Christian Bergman from AAA Tacoma and, to make room on the club’s 25-man major league roster, optioned RHP Dan Altavilla back to the Rainiers. Bergman is expected to join the Mariners in time for the start of Monday’s 4 p.m. PT game against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.

Bergman, 29, is on his third stint with the club. He was outrighted to Tacoma Aug. 16 and started a pair of games with the Rainiers. Bergman tossed five shutout innings, including four scoreless, Aug. 13 vs. the Angels.

He is 4-4 with a 4.91 ERA in 11 games over two stints with Seattle. In 16 starts with Tacoma, Bergman is 9-4 with a 5.34 ERA. In four MLB seasons with Colorado (2014-16) and Seattle (2017), he was 11-13 with a 5.56 ERA.

Altavilla, 24, worked a career-high three innings in Sunday’s 10-1 loss to the Yankees, allowing two earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks. He’s had four stints with Seattle this season.

Altavilla is 1-1 with a 5.19 ERA in 31 relief appearances with the Mariners, holding opponents scoreless in 19 of his 31 outings.

The native of McKeesport, PA, made his MLB debut with Seattle Aug. 27, 2016 at Chicago. The Mariners selected Altavilla in the fifth round of the 2014 draft out of Mercyhurst (PA.) College.

The Mariners (66-65) begin the final three contests of a season-long, 12-game road trip. LHP Marco Gonzales (0-1, 6.23) will throw for Seattle opposite ex-Mariner farmhand Chris Tillman (1-7, 7.75).
