The Mariners traded OF Leonys Martin and cash considerations Thursday night to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for a player to be named later or cash. Seattle designated Martin for assignment last week when he could not get his batting average above .174.
Martin, 29, had one triple, three homers and eight RBIs in 34 games for the Mariners this season. In 88 games with AAA Tacoma, he hit .306 with 63 runs, 24 doubles, five triples, 11 home runs, 39 RBIs and 25 stolen bases.
Martin was acquired by the Mariners along with RHP Anthony Bass from Texas in exchange for RHP Tom Wilhelmsen, OF James Jones and a player to be named later Nov. 16, 2015.
The native of Cuba appeared in parts of seven MLB seasons with the Rangers (2011-15) and Mariners (2016-17), posting a career batting average of .248 with 38 home runs and 175 RBIs in 606 games.
The Mariners (66-68), losers five five consecutive games to finish a season-long, 12-game road trip 5-7, begin a nine-game home stand Friday with the first of three against the Oakland Athletics.
RHP Yovani Gallardo (5-10, 5.78) will throw the series opener at 7:10 p.m. against Oakland opposite LHP Sean Manaea (9-8, 4.55). The Mariners begin the day 4.5 games behind in the race for the second American League wild card.
