With the first pick in the NFL’s waiver-claim order Sunday, the Cleveland Browns promptly grabbed WR Kasen Williams, a day after the Seahawks jettisoned the former University of Washington receiver, who had nine catches for 208 yards during the preseason. Cleveland had the first pick due to posting the league’s worst record in 2016.

Seattle made no waiver claims Sunday.

Two other players waived by the Seahawks were claimed. DT Quinton Jefferson, a fifth-round pick in 2016, went to the Los Angeles Rams and CB Pierre Desir was picked up by Indianapolis.

Williams, Jefferson and Desir were the only Seahawks claimed, meaning every other player released by Seattle Saturday is now a free agent, although RB Alex Collins signed with the New York Jets practice squad, according to USA Today. A fifth-round pick in 2016, Collins played in 10 games for Seattle last season.

From the NFL transactions list and media reports, the Seahawks have seven practice squad members either signed or committed: WR David Moore, TE Tyrone Swoopes, C Joey Hunt, DT Garrison Smith, CB Mike Tyson, WR Cyril Grayson and RB Mike Davis.

Seattle’s 10-member practice squad probably won’t be announced until later this week.

  1. I assumed Jermaine was traded, in part, due to the progress that Kasen had shown as a player. I guess the RB’s showed more on special teams than he did. Not sure if releasing Kasen is the right move when Lockett might not be at full speed and Richardson has shown to be injury prone.

  2. “With the first pick in the NFL’s waiver-claim order Sunday, the Cleveland Browns”… select…

Now there’s a missing prime time broadcast opportunity for ESPN. Perhaps not too far off into our cable sports viewing future. With a full week of hype leading up to it with a team network “insiders” to gift us with their mock boards.

“promptly grabbed WR Kasen Williams”…..more seriously, that’s a very striking fact that I was not aware of. Wow! That makes the move by the Hawks even more interesting in terms of the regard Williams’ availability was seen around the league.
