Despite its 42-7 pasting of Oregon State Saturday night, Washington remained No. 6 in the Associated Press college football rankings released Sunday. Washington State, though, made a leap from No. 16 to No. 11 after beating former No. 5 USC 30-27 in Pullman Friday night. The Huskies and Cougars are 5-0 overall and 2-0 in Pac-12 play.
Washington received 1,218 points from Associated Press voters, up slightly from last week’s 1,141. After beating a top-five team for the first time in 14 years, the Cougars collected 910 points.
With its loss to the Cougars, USC (4-1, 2-1) fell to No. 14. Instead of Washington moving up a notch to USC’s previous No. 5 ranking, Georgia jumped from seventh to fifth after thumping Tennessee 41-0.
Below the No. 14 Trojans, the only other Pac-12 school in the rankings this week is No. 20 Utah, which was idle.
In the coaches poll, Washington drew 1,352 points and moved up to No. 5 while Washington State collected 952 and moved from No. 16 to No. 11. USC, which had been No. 5 in the coaches poll last week, tumbled to 15th. Utah came in at No. 18. Stanford (18) and Oregon (17) received minimal support in the coaches rankings.
Alabama (5-0) remained No. 1 in both polls and was followed in the AP rankings by No. 2 Clemson (5-0), No. 3 Oklahoma (4-0) and No. 4 Penn State (5-0).
Washington returns to Husky Stadium Saturday against California (3-2, 0-2) at 7:45 p.m. on ESPN. At 5 p.m. Saturday (Fox), Washington State plays Oregon at Autzen Stadium in Eugene.
