Huskies (5), Cougars (8) both in AP’s top 10

Washington (6-0, 3-0) and Washington State (6-0, 3-0) took advantage of lopsided victories and No. 3 Oklahoma’s 38-31 loss to unranked Iowa State to advance in the weekly Associated Press college football rankings released Sunday. The Huskies, a 38-7 winner over Cal,  moved up one notch to No. 5 while the Cougars, a 33-10 winner over Oregon on the road, climbed three spots to No. 8.

Washington and Washington State are both ranked inAP’s top 10 for the first time since Oct. 27, 1997 (the schools were ranked in the top 10 for the first time a week earlier on Oct. 20).

Washington collected 1,284 votes while the Cougars received 1,094. Two other Pac-12 schools also made the Top 25, USC (5-1, 3-1) at No. 13 and Stanford (4-2, 3-1) at No. 22. The Trojans crushed Oregon State 38-10 Saturday while the Cardinal defeated Utah 23-20. The Utes were ranked 20th in the AP poll and dropped out Sunday after losing to Stanford.

Alabama (6-0) remained a solid No. 1 in the AP rankings with 1,507 points. The Crimson Tide are followed by No. 2 Clemson, No. 3 Penn State and No. 4 Georgia.

coaches poll, also released Sunday, Washington jumped two spots to No. 4 while the Cougars advanced from No. 11 to No. 9.

WSU is off to its best start since the 2001 Cougars opened 7-0. That team finished 10-2. WSU and Washington are both 6-0 for the first time since 1992. That year, the Cougars defeated Washington 42-23 in the famous “Snow Bowl” Apple Cup in Pullman. The 1992 Cougars finished 9-3 and defeated Utah in the Copper Bowl. Washington lost the Rose Bowl to Michigan.

Washington will play at Arizona State Saturday at 7:45 p.m. (ESPN). Washington State remains on the road for a 7:30 p.m. Friday meeting with California (ESPN).
