Always innovating with ways to crush the disabled list, the Mariners tried a fresh tactic Friday: Two at once, from the same unit.
Relievers Juan Nicasio (right knee effusion) and Dan Altavilla (right elbow sprain) were placed on the 10-day disabled list ahead of Friday’s game in Tampa against the Rays. Called up from Tacoma were DH/1B Dan Vogelbach and right-handed reliever Mike Morin.
Mariners manager Scott Servais said Altavilla was getting an MRI and flying back to Seattle. Nicasio had been experiencing swelling for several days, and the decision was made to rest him. He will continue to throw.
Morin, 27, makes his Mariners debut when he appears in a game. In 20 games with Tacoma, he was 2-1 with three saves and a 3.24 ERA. He has limited left-handed hitters to a .196 batting average against.
Morin was claimed off waivers from Kansas City Dec. 8 and outrighted to Tacoma March 14.
He has appeared in parts of four big league seasons with the Los Angeles Angels (2014-17) and Kansas City (2017), compiling a 10-8 mark with a save and a 4.61 ERA. He struck out 160 while walking 48.
It’s the third call-up for Vogelbach this season. In 22 games, he’s batting .200 with six runs, two doubles, two home runs, five RBI and 10 walks. In 32 games with the Rainiers, he is hitting .304 with nine doubles, 10 home runs, 24 RBI and 28 walks with 18 strikeouts.

Mariners get double lucky with the Ohtani situation. Not only would it have been a big loss if they had signed him, but their chances of making the playoffs got better this season with the Angels’ misfortune.
