The Seahawks signed three-time Pro Bowl cornerback Antoine Winfield, formerly of the Minnesota Vikings, Wednesday to a one-year contract. A No. 1 draft pick by the Buffalo Bills (23rd overall selection in 1999), Winfield played five years in Buffalo before joining the Vikings as an unrestricted free agent in 2004.

In addition to his three Pro Bowl selections, Winfield was named to the “50 Greatest Vikings Team” as part of the club’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2010. Winfield was also selected second-team Associated Press All-Pro in 2008.

Winfield started 15 of 16 games last season and totaled the second-most tackles of his career with 101 (72 solo), adding three interceptions and a career-high 12 passes defensed.

The 5-foot-9, 190-pound Winfield attended Ohio State University.

“He’s always been a phenomenal run support player, and that shows up in all of the ‘Money Ball’ statistics,” said Seahawks GM John Schneider. “He’s always rated very high at the top because of his run support. He’s very instinctive inside, and he had a very nice season last year. You see him playing against bigger guys like Calvin Johnson and Brandon Marshall, and he’s pretty effective against those guys.”

Winfield has played in 191 games with 173 starts, collecting 1,170 tackles (906 solo), 7.5 sacks, 27 interceptions and 89 passes defensed in his career.

GOING-FOR-IT. That should be the Seahawks slogan this season. Sadly, this signing most likely means that Marcus Trufant won’t be re-signed.
