    Broken finger halts Huskies’ Seferian-Jenkins

Coach Steve Sarkisian surprised a gaggle of reporters Tuesday when he commented on TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins, who didn’t participate in the afternoon scrimmage in Husky Stadium. No, he didn’t make public the punishment for the junior’s offseason DUI conviction. But he may not be available for the Aug. 31 opener anyway.

Sarkisian said Seferian-Jenkins broke a bone in his right pinky finger, presumably during Monday night’s practice. The injury requires surgery. Sarkisian said he didn’t know how long the record-setting tight end will be out, but that more information will be available by the end of the week.

“He came out with a good attitude,” Sarkisian said. “He’s doing all the conditioning work and the fundamental stuff from a footwork standpoint, but he won’t be catching balls here for a little while.”

At six-foot-six and 276 pounds, Seferian-Jenkins will likely be a first-round selection when he chooses to enter the NFL draft. In 2012, he led the NCAA in receptions for tight ends with 69 catches, 850 yards and seven touchdowns.
