2 weeks before Browner’s NFL status known

The NFL status of Brandon Browner, a source of irritation for the usually upbeat Pete Carrroll Friday, won’t be resolved until around Christmas, according to sources that talked Sunday morning to the league’s broadcast partner, ESPN. Browner turned down the chance to have his one-year suspension by three months, believing his appeal will result in exoneration.

Browner attempted to practice this week after recovering from a groin injury against Atlanta Nov. 10, but didn’t get anywhere, according to Carroll. He is not playing in Sunday’s game in San Francisco against the 49ers.

If he can recover to be of help, the Seahawks want to avoid putting him on injured reserve, where he will be lost for the season.

But if he is suspended for violating the NFL’s rules on substance abuse, reportedly for marijuana, that would clear a roster spot that the Seahawks wanted to fill with a veteran cornerback, Perrish Cox. He was signed, then cut a day later when Browner appealed his suspension.

Browner, an Oregon State grad who will be a free agent after the season, is fighting the suspension because, at 29, a year lost to suspension could be the end of his career. He probably will be done as a Seahawk after the season, but they could use him now.

The NFL bigwigs who will make the decision on Browner’s suspension are a bunch of lazy asses. This is not to condone Browner’s choices, but when a player’s career is on the line, the bigwigs should act much more swiftly instead of playing the delay-linger-and- wait game.
