Seahawks Sherman could be Defensive MVP

Seahawks CB Richard Sherman intercepted two passes in the first half Sunday to raise his season total to six and tie Giants S Antrel Rolle for the top mark in the NFL. Sherman might have earned more acclaim in the fourth quarter for leaping out of the end zone to tip another bad idea from Eli Manning to S Earl Thomas, who secured Seattle’s fifth interception of the game.

Per NFL.com, Sherman is a frontrunner for Defensive Player of the Year. What else is the national media saying about the Seahawks?

    • In a development that should surprise no one, Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin took exception to a story written last week that criticized Seattle’s receivers. After catching six passes for 71 yards and a touchdown Sunday, he let the locker room know about it, wrote ESPN.
    •  In his Game at a Glance, Seahawks.com’s Clare Farnsworth named backup DT Clinton McDonald the unsung hero after McDaniel made one tackle and plugged up running lanes filling in for “violently ill” DT Tony McDaniel.
    • Sherman said after the game he wasn’t happy last week when Giants QB Eli Manning labeled Seattle’s secondary over-aggressive.
    • CBSSports.com questioned if anyone in the NFC is capable of beating the Seahawks at CenturyLink Field.
    • Bob Condotta’s notebook explained how Thomas helped instill confidence in backup CB Byron Maxwell (three interceptions in three games) when Maxwell learned he would replace Brandon Browner (appealing suspension) and Walter Thurmond (violated NFL’s substance abuse policy).
    • The Cardinals are 9-5 and winners in six of their past seven after a 37-34 OT victory in Tennessee, but Bruce Arians’ team might not make the playoffs, even if it finishes 11-5. They play the Seahawks Sunday at CenturyLink Field.

I’m somewhat surprised at how often teams throw to Richard, considering his reputation and that it’s pretty well accepted he can more than walk the walk as well as talk the talk. When Kenny Easely won Defensive Player of the Year NO ONE ever threw in his general direction. Granted Richard hasn’t won the award yet but he’s blatantly the best lockdown CB in the league. But I suppose the entire Legion of Boom (the weed jokes are getting old now; hey they can play) is hard to throw against. When Maxwell is coming up with 2 INT’s and Lane gets six solo tackles they might as well give the entire secondary the award.

Heck, just give it to the entire defense. They’ve been that good this season.
