GAME:  Oregon (13-4 overall, 1-4 Pac-12 ) at Washington (11-8 overall, 3-3 Pac-12). WHEN: Thursday, 8 p.m., Alaska Airlines Arena. TYPE: Conference. MEETING: 296th (UW  leads 187-108). RANKINGS: Neither school ranked. COACHES: Dana Altman, Oregon; Lorenzo Romar, Washington. TV: Fox Sports 1. RADIO: KJR 950 AM

Lorenzo Romar’s Washington Huskies got off to a 3-1 start in Pac-12 play largely by tightening up a defense that allowed an average of 79.2 points per game during the non-conference schedule. In their first four league games, UW brought that number down to 64.3, using it to score wins at Arizona State and over Utah and No. 15 Colorado at home.

Then the Huskies went to the Bay Area where, against Cal and Stanford, they reverted to non-conference form by allowing an average of 80.5 points in 82-56 and 79-67 defeats. Now, with the Huskies back in Seattle to face the Oregon schools this week, their first obstacle is a Ducks team that can light it up.

“Oregon is one of the most potent offensive teams in our league,” said Romar. “We will certainly be tested.”

In fact, Oregon is the most potent offensive team in the Pac-12. Through 17 games, the Ducks are leading the conference in scoring at 87.4 points per game, three more than runnerup UCLA. They have tallied 100 or more four times, beating BYU 100-96, Ole Miss 115-105, San Francisco 100-82 and Western Carolina 107-83.

Junior Joseph Young leads the way at 18.0 and Mike Moser is at 14.2. Moser leads the Ducks in rebounding in 12 of 17 games. Oregon leads the Pac-12 in free throw percentage (76.9) and ranks third in 3-point shooting (40.2).

But the Ducks are vulnerable. After a 13-0 start, they have lost four in a row and are coming off an 80-72 loss to Oregon State in Corvallis. With that defeat, Oregon has moved into last place in the conference in most points allowed per game, 77.8. The Ducks even allowed 100 points to Colorado, a team Washington held to 54 two weeks ago.

Despite four consecutive losses, Oregon has an RPI of 25 to Washington’s 83. The Huskies need a bounce-back game from leading scorer C.J. Wilcox, who scored only 9 points and went 1-for-6 from 3-point range against Stanford.

SERIES: Dates to February, 1904, when Washington recorded a 19-16 victory over Oregon in Eugene. Oregon has won three in a row and four of the past five, including the last meeting, March 14, 2013 at the Pac-12 Tournament. Oregon prevailed 80-77 in overtime. C.J. Wilcox scored 19 for the Huskies and Scott Suggs 18.
