Pre-game: Carpenter gets start ahead of Bowie

A week after he became a minor sports celebrity,  Michael Bowie found himself out of Sunday’s NFC Championship game. The seventh-round draftee was a starter against New Orleans last week — the first start of his life at left guard — but Sunday was on Seattle’s pre-game list of inactives.

Despite playing the entire way against the Saints, Bowie was replaced by James Carpenter. No reason was given during the week such as injury, so the presumption is the coaches felt Carpenter would be a better match-up for the 49ers’ well regarded front seven, especially since they play a 3-4 scheme.

Coach Pete Carroll left it open during the week whether Bowie would start. Backup OL Paul McQuistan was active, so he may get relief snaps for Carpenter. Another rookie, Alvin Bailey, was active too.

The other Seattle inactives are Percy Harvin, Christine Michael, Caylin Hauptmann, O’Brien Schofield Benson, Mayowa, and Jordan Hill. Hill and Harvin are injured.

Don’t understand this move. Carroll must have his reasons, just hope he’s right.
