Walter Thurmond, who started in the Super Bowl as the Seahawks’ third (nickel) cornerback, played in 12 games and sat out four others for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, agreed Sunday to a one-year contract with the New York Giants worth $3.5 million. Thurmond’s signing was first reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN via a league source.

Thurmond, 26, who finished with 26 tackles, one interception, one sack and one forced fumble, becomes the ninth Seahawk to exit the team since the Super Bowl, and the seventh member of the NFL’s top-ranked defense to do so.

He joins DE Red Bryant (Jacksonville), DT Clint McDonald (Tampa Bay), DE Chris Clemons (Jacksonville), DB Brandon Browner (New England), S Chris Maragos (Philadelphia) and LB O’Brien Schofield (New York Giants). Schofield’s deal was voided due to injury.

On his free agency tour, Thurmond also visited with former Seahawks defensive coordinator Gus Bradley and the Jacksonville Jaguars, and San Francisco 49ers.

A fourth-round pick by Seattle out of Oregon (111th overall) in 2010, Thurmond played in 34 career games for the Seahawks with eight starts.

Probably the best deal he could get. Not surprised it’s only for one year. No way he’d get $3.5 mil from the Hawks.
