Goodes’ 64 (Couples 71) tops Boeing Classic

Mike Goodes fired an 8-under 64 Friday to take a one-stroke lead over Mark Brooks in the first round of the Boeing Classic at TPC at Snoqualmie Ridge. The 57-year-old Goodes, who eagled the first hole coming out of a bunker, had six birdies, marking the first time he has held a lead in any round of any of any tournament since the 2013 Insperity Open in Houston.

Although Goodes, looking for his second career win to go with his victory in the 2009 Allianz Championship, fashioned a one-shot lead, no first-round leader in the previous nine Boeing tournaments has gone on to win the title.

“I’m dying to win,” Goodes said. “That doesn’t necessary mean you will but I’d love to win again. It would mean a lot.”

Brooks, the 1996 PGA champion who shot shot 65, had a six-under 30 on the back nine, one stroke short of the course and tournament record of 29 by Scott Simpson in 1996.

Mark O’Meara, Gene Sauers, Scott Hoch, Mark McNulty and Jeff Sluman all shot rounds of 66, and five players, including Mark Calcavecchia, finished at 67.

Seattle native Fred Couples finished at one-under 71 while defending champion John Riegger had a 73.
