PULLMAN – Chris Petersen’s first season as coach of the Washington Huskies has not been without its share of challenges, but the Washington State Cougars did not provide the Huskies with much of a challenge in a lopsided Apple Cup on Saturday night at frozen Martin Stadium.

Dwayne Washington ran for touchdowns of 51 yards on Washington’s second play from scrimmage in the first quarter, then 60 yards on the second play from scrimmage in the third quarter, to lead the Huskies to a 31-13 victory.

Washington led 31-0 before the Cougars scored twice in the final 10 minutes. A sellout crowd of 32,952 turned out despite temperatures in the teens. Almost all seats were occupied, but the crowd thinned considerably after halftime.

Washington finished with 135 yards on 16 carries. The bowl-bound Huskies (8-5, 4-5 Pac-12) had a 436-376 advantage in total yards over the Cougars (3-9, 2-7).

Cyler Miles completed 25 of 39 passes for 249 yards and two touchdowns for the Huskies. Washington State’s Luke Falk completed 27 of 49 passes for 355 yards and two TDs. Falk threw a pair of interceptions, one more than Miles.

WSU senior wide receiver Vince Mayle finished his record-breaking season with five catches for 79 yards. Mayle has agreed to play in the Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine all-star games for seniors.
