Mariners agree on deals with Furbush, Scribner

The Mariners Friday agreed to terms with LHP Charlie Furbush and RHP Evan Scribner on one-year contracts for the 2016 season, avoiding arbitration with both. With those signings, the Mariners have no remaining arbitration-eligible players.

Furbush, 29, was on the disabled list from July 9 through the end of last season with left biceps tendinitis and a slight rotator cuff tear. He was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Sept. 8. He posted a 2.08 ERA in 33 relief appearances before going on the DL.

In five MLB seasons, Furbush has a 3.97 ERA with 268 strikeouts in 247 games. Since 2012 when he began pitching exclusively as a reliever, he has posted a 3.23 ERA with 201 strikeouts and has limited opposing hitters to a .196 batting average.

Scribner, 30, was acquired from Oakland in exchange for RHP Trey Cochran-Gill Dec. 8. He went 2-2 with a 4.35 ERA in a career-high 54 appearances for Oakland last season. He struck out 64 hitters in 60 innings pitched while walking just four. His 16-to-1 strikeout ration led all MLB relievers. Scribner missed September with a strained right latissimus dorsi muscle.

Scribner has pitched in the majors with Oakland (2012-15) and San Diego (2011). In his big league career, he is 5-2 with a 4.21 ERA in 125 relief appearances.
