Seahawks sign wide receiver, back from CFL

The Seahawks Thursday dipped into the Canadian Football League, signing WR Jeff Fuller, who played the past three seasons with the Calgary Stampeders, and RB Cameron Marshall, who spent the past two with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Fuller is a product of Texas A&M, Marshall from Arizona State.

The 25-year-old Fuller, 6-foot-4 and 217 pounds, went undrafted and spent part of his rookie season on the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad before signing with Calgary in September 2013. Last season, he produced a career-high 47 catches for 619 yards and three touchdowns.

The Calgary Sun compared Fuller to Chris Matthews, another big receiver who played in the CFL before signing with the Seahawks in 2014 and coming up big in Super Bowl XLIX against New England with four catches for 109 yards and a touchdown.

“Big WR with NFL size,” the Sun said in a tweet. “Looks just like Chris Matthews physically. Inconsistent hands, history of injuries. Lots of upside tho.”

The Seahawks released Matthews, who had four receptions in 2015, after the Nov. 11 game against Dallas when the coaches concluded he wasn’t reliable. He subsequently signed with Baltimore and had seven catches for 91 yards.

Marshall played with the Sun Devils from 2009-12 and spent time in Miami’s training camp before he was released in 2013. With Marshawn Lynch’s retirement, Marshall is one of two running backs under contract with the Seahawks for 2016, along with Thomas Rawls. Christine Michael, who rejoined the Seahawks late last season, is a restricted free agent, but is also expected to return.

I never heard why Matthews was dropped by the Hawks – personal issues? He sure seemed to have good hands. Poor route running?
