The Mariners Tuesday recalled RHP Cody Martin and, as expected, placed LHP James Paxton on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to Aug. 8) with a left elbow contusion. The 26-year-old Martin, who has made five relief appearances with Seattle this season, was to be available for Tuesday night’s 7:05 p.m., PT game against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim.

Martin is 1-2 with a 2.70 ERA in two stints with Seattle. At AAA Tacoma, he was 9-7 with a 3.93 ERA. Over his last seven starts with the Rainiers, Martin is 4-2 with a 2.61 ERA and 39 strikeouts. Martin earned the win in his Mariners debut, tossing one scoreless inning  June 2 at San Diego. Seattle claimed Martin off waivers from Oakland Oct. 29.

Paxton, 27, was removed from his last start, Aug. 7 vs. the Angels, after he was struck by a line drive in the top of the ninth inning. Paxton is 4-5 with a 3.53 ERA in 13 starts with Seattle.

Since being recalled June 1, Paxton has posted seven quality starts, including three outings of at least eight innings and two or fewer runs allowed. Over his past seven starts, Paxton is 3-2 with a 3.06 ERA.

The Mariners (63-54), who have won nine of their past 10 games, start LHP Ariel Miranda (1-0, 6.00) against the Angels Tuesday night. LHP Tyler Skaggs (1-1, 4.37) will throw for LA, a loser of 11 in a row. Second-place Seattle trails Texas by six games in the AL West.
