Seahawks add defensive coach and player

The Seahawks added a cornerback and defensive assistant coach Friday in two small moves to begin to repair a defense that that gave up at least 34 points in three of the final six games of the regular season.

Signed to a futures contract was DB Perrish Cox, whose link to Seattle had been reported earlier in the week. That means that Cox, 30, will join the 90-man roster that becomes part of the new league year March 9. Cox is likely insurance during the long recovery expected for CB DeShawn Shead, who had a serious knee injury in the playoff game in Atlanta.

Cox played two games for the Seahawks in 2013, and has been in the league since 2010 after being drafted in the fifth round from Oklahoma State. He’s played with five teams and had  45 starts in 81 games.

Cox was arrested in 2010 on a charge of felony sexual assault in Colorado, but was acquitted of the charge in 2012.

The Seahawks also signed OT Robert Myers to the 90-man roster after having spent most of the season on the practice squad’s injured reserve list. He was a fifth-round draft choice by Baltimore in 2015 and spent time with practice squads of the Colts and Broncos.

The Seahawks, according to ESPN, added Clint Hurtt as a defensive line assistant coach, a new position that means no known vacancy was being filled.

Hurtt was a defensive assistant for three years with the Chicago Bears, including the past two as outside linebackers. The Seahawks aleready have Travis Jones as D-line coach and Dwaine Board as an assistant, part of a 23-man coaching staff.

Hurtt played and also coached at the University of Miami, where he coached Calais Campbell, the longtime star of the Arizona Cardinals who is an unrestricted free agent.

Interesting…Art, are you hinting that the Seahawks might be in play for Campbell. That would be a formidable D-line with Bennett/Campbell inside and Clark/Avril outside on passing downs. (Reed/Campbell inside and Bennett/Clark/Avril outside on running downs.)

That said, I think they would be better off investing in OLs and CBs, and one durable RB this offseason. (Though angering the Cardinals and there fans down here would make the Campbell move particularly enjoyable for me.)

A 23 man coaching staff!? It’s time to update my coaching resume. 90 coaches /24 = 3.75 coaches per player. I would work a .75 coaching position. I can help the Hawks win, win, and the 12’s will never get tired of winning.

Must be Cougar math?? :-) Guessing that you mean 90 players divided by 24 coaches=3.75 players per coach?

Where’s the editor? My bad. 90 players is correct.

I would’ve left it alone normally…but then I saw that you were a Cougar and couldn’t resist.
