The Mariners Friday recalled RHP Emilio Pagan from AAA Tacoma and, to make room on the 25-man roster, optioned struggling RHP Sam Gaviglio to the Rainiers. Pagan was available Friday night when the Oakland Athletics played in the second of four games at Safeco Field.

Pagan, 26, has allowed only one hit and no runs in his past two MLB outings covering eight innings. In three stints with Seattle this season (May 2-6, May 22-24, June 10-11), the 6-foot-3, 205-pounder is 0-1 with a 4.22 ERA in four games. Pagan made his MLB debut May 3 vs. the Angels.

In his last eight games in Tacoma, Pagan had three saves and gavbe up no runs. The native of Greenville, SC., was selected by the Mariners in the 10th round of the 2013 draft.

Gaviglio is 3-4, 4.31 in 11 games, including 10 starts, with Seattle. The Mariners are 6-4 in his 10 starts, but the Athletics knocked him around for seven earned runs in 4.2 innings Thursday night in a 7-4 win.

Gaviglio was acquired by the Mariners from St. Louis in exchange for INF Ty Kelly Nov. 20, 2014. The native of Ashland, Ore., played three seasons at Oregon State University.

The Mariners (41-46), who have dropped four consecutive games and eight in a row at Safeco Field, sent LHP James Paxton (6-3, 2.37) to the mound Friday night to face LHP Sean Manaea (7-4, 3.75).
