The one roster spot that was an unknown entering spring training was solved Sunday when the the Mariners decided that rookie Mike Marjama would back up Mike Zunino behind the plate. Marjama’s competition, David Freitas, was sent down to Class AAA Tacoma.

Marjama, 28, was a 23rd-round draft pick in 201l from Long Beach State by the Chicago White Sox. He had nine plate appearances with the Mariners in September after 21 games in Tacoma. He was acquired in August from Tampa Bay.

“I like a lot of things that David Freitas brings, I just think Marjama has had a better spring to this point,” manager Scott Servais told reporters after the Mariners’ 16-3 loss to Cleveland. “It will give Marjama a chance to catch more regularly here in this last week, with him and Zunino going back and forth.”

In 14 spring games, Marjama has a .286 average with a .412 on-base percentage and two homers.

Wish the M’s would have pursued Geovany Soto instead.
