    Mariners Sign 27 Players From Amateur Draft

    The Mariners completed deals for  27 players from the 2012 first-year player draft Wednesday, including eight right-handed pitchers, five left-handed pitchers, one catcher, 10 infielders and three outfielders. The complete list (including the draft round):

    • RHPs: Grady Wood (10th), Blake Hauser (13th), Dominic Leone (16th), Levi Dean (23rd), Matt Vedo (24th), Mark Bordonaro (25th), Aaron Brooks (26th) and Matt Brazis (28th).
    • LHPs: Nate Koneski (19th), Steven Ewing (20th), Scott DeCecco (21st), Blake Holovach (27th) and Rusty Shellhorn (31st).
    • Cs: Toby Demello (29th).
    • INFs: Joe DeCarlo (2nd), Patrick Kivlehan (4th),  Chris Taylor (5th), Tim Lopes (6th), Taylor Ard (7th), Jamodrick McGruder (9th), Kristian Brito (11th), Brock Hebert (14th), Gabrial Franca (22nd) and Richard Palase (32nd).
    • OFs: Michael Faulkner (12th), Dario Pizzano (15th) and Jabari Henry (18th).

    Seattle has signed 25 of the team’s first 30 picks, including seven players in the first 10 rounds. Overall the Mariners have agreed to terms with 27 of the 41 players selected in the draft.

    The Mariners’ first-round selection catcher Mike Zunino from the University of Florida is  playing in the College World Series. The Gators, the No. 1 overall seed, begin play on Saturday vs. the University of South Carolina.

    “We are excited to get these players in uniform and to see all the young talent we recently drafted in action,” Tom McNamara, director of scouting, said.

    Short-A Everett will begin action Friday at Tri-City. The AquaSox will play an exhibition game Wednesday vs. the Everett Merchants. The rookie-league Pulaski Mariners’ season gets under way Tuesday vs. Burlington, while the rookie-league Peoria Mariners begin play Wednesday vs. the AZL Padres.

      There’s a big place in my heart for baseball flakes! They give the game color, sometimes excitement. I spent an afternoon with Jimmy Piersall and saw odd behavior practiced with zest!!
