Seahawks’ Sherman gets NFC weekly award

CB Richard Sherman, who against the Jets Sunday had a goal-line interception and his first sack of the season, earned NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Sherman’s pick ended the Jets’ only advance inside the Seattle 40-yard line all afternoon in the 28-7 triumph at the Clink.

It was his fourth interception, which ties him for third in the NFL. His sack of Jets QB Mark Sanchez, on a corner blitz when he came unblocked,  forced a fumble that was recovered by Seattle and led to a touchdown.

“That was my first sack ever, so I think that might have been the better play,” he said after the game. “I never thought I was going to get a sack because they never send me on blitzes. They just make me cover, but that was a great play.”

Sherman also had three tackles and three passes defensed.  Seattle did not give up an offensive score; the Jets’ only touchdown was on a strip sack of Russell Wilson that was returned for a TD by Jets tackle Muhammad Wilkerson. The Jets had 185 yards of total offense.

“That’s a testament to the entire defense,” Sherman said. “The front seven played great, and we tried to tackle well in the back end. There wasn’t a lot of tackles to be made because the line was getting on everything.”

Sherman, 24, was a fifth-round pick in the 2011 draft from Stanford.
