Outfielder Carlos Peguero had a pair of home runs in support of pitching prospects Danny Hultzen and Taijuan Walker and the Mariners cruised to a 5-1 Cactus League victory over the Cleveland Indians Wednesday afternoon in Goodyear. The win was the fifth in a row for the Mariners (5-1).
Peguero, a candidate for an outfield backup slot, drilled a solo home run in the third inning and added another blast in the fourth. The Mariners have 12 spring training home runs, tops in the Cactus League.
Hultzen, a first-round pick in June’s free-agent draft, started and had four strikeouts and two walks with one hit allowed in two innings. Walker, the No. 1 pick by the Mariners in 2010, fanned two and did not allow a hit in two innings.
Kendrys Morales, Seattle’s major off-season acquisition who started at first base, delivered his first spring hits. After starting play 0-for-5, Morales had a lead-off single in the second inning and another hit in the fourth.
Jon Garland will make his debut Thursday at 12:05 p.m. PT when he starts against the San Francisco Giants. Garland is expected to work one inning and then give way to Blake Beavan.
