In anticipation of a new roster addition, the Sounders waived forward Sammy Ochoa Wednesday. “He just hasn’t been as productive,” coach Sigi Schmid told the Tacoma News Tribune. “Obviously we haven’t had the opportunities because of the extra games. In preparation of maybe doing something else, we have to do this as well.”
Ochoa was usurped in the 2013 front line rotation by Obafemi Martins and Lamar Neagle. Ochoa scored 10 goals with two assists in 26 career appearances since his arrival in August 2011 from Mexico, where he played five seasons in the first division.
This season he played 390 minutes in eight appearances across all competitions, including two starts in league play.
In other news, forward Eddie Johnson will play with the U.S. Men’s National Team in Wednesday’s CONCACAF semifinal match against Honduras. Meanwhile, Martins was kicked inadvertently in the knee during practice Tuesday, but the injury was not deemed serious.
